Somewhat Lazy Saturday

by tatiana on November 7, 2010

Happy Daylight Savings! The clock just struck 2am on my clock and 1am on my computer. I am super tired, but really excited about the new/old music I have acquired thanks to the mister and am revisiting the album Give Up by The Postal Service. Ahhh, freshman year at UC Irvine. Livin’ in Prado. How I miss it, but not too much.

Today was somewhat of a “couch potato” day. I haven’t watched that much TV in a really long time. I think I started with the LA Ink marathon, Millionaire Matchmaker, then 16 and Pregnant, onto some movies – Welcome to the Dollhouse and California Suite. After that it starts to get blurry. Although I sat on the couch all day (except for that part of the day I spent traveling to and from the Post Office and seeking out cupcakes), I was knitting up a storm. Yes, knitting. I’ve been crocheting like a madwoman (if madwomen crochet) for a few weeks and decided to switch it up for a day. It was nice until I realized how much longer it takes to knit an item vs. crocheting it. Hot damn. But, in the end, knitting worked out better for this project (seen above). It should be launching in the shop in the next week or so. Keep an eye out! I’m really excited about it.

DIY Hello Kitty Halloween Costume

by tatiana on November 2, 2010

This DIY costume is a little more Sandra Lee than Martha Stewart in that it’s semi-homemade. I’ve been a little obsessed with Hello Kitty lately… wait… LIES… I’ve been obsessed with Hello Kitty ever since the day my mom pushed my stroller into the Sanrio store at the Montebello Mall in the 1980s. Recently I’ve embraced my obsession, in what some would call a semi-obnoxious way. Halloween definitely gave me an excuse to exploit my love for this timeless icon. [click to continue…]

I remember having a heated conversation one time (or one too many times) with an anti-currency, anti-government… sort of anti-order in general, friend of mine. (I’m getting a migraine just thinking about our conversations). Anyway, our little chat was centered around the concept of currency. I argued that even if the U.S. dollar was diminished, citizens would quickly establish a new form of currency in order to exchange goods and services. He disagreed and claimed that currency was entirely unnecessary – that civilization could function without any sort of exchange. I don’t know about that. I think those living in his Utopian “civilization” would have to be very open and trusting, maybe like Burning Man-goers. But I don’t think that way of living could last very long. People would start coming down from their happy drugs and bogarting the town’s supply of chicken nuggets and NOT sharing. I know I would.

That being said, I don’t think a civilization could run smoothly solely on a bartering system, but I DO think that a mixture of the two can work. So, we come back to reality. In the world of Etsy, bartering is very much a possibility AND totally awesome.

Pascalle Ballard (aka fabricalchemist) contacted me on Etsy and wanted to exchange something from her shop for a pair of custom red slippers (seen above). I didn’t see anything in her shop that went with the decor in my room, so I asked her if I could possibly request a custom illustration… and she said yes!

The Wasp Duchess, by Pascalle Ballard (5.5″ x 8″)

And OH MY GOD it came out amazing. I can’t wait to frame it. I asked her to draw something Gothic Lolita inspired, using yellow and a dash of lace and what she created was even cooler than I had imagined. The result is this amazing piece. What a wonderful way to collect art! Be sure to check out her shop for her many unique and beautiful pieces.

One of my favorite crafty people, the oh-so-talented Twinkie Chan, will be at Booksmith in San Francisco on Tuesday, November 9th at 7:30pm to talk about her new book Crochet Goodies for Fashion Foodies.

Here’s a fun video featuring Twinkie making one of her scrumptious cupcake scarves. So cute! I can’t wait to pick up her book and start making yummy things.

October Shop Update, Part 1

by tatiana on October 1, 2010

Here is part one of my October Babushka Designs shop update. The new slippers were inspired by one of my favorite book series as a kid, Little House on the Prairie. I imagine that Laura Ingalls Wilder would have loved to have worn these around her cottage.

I still need to upload some hats, so stay tuned!

Cotton Candy Slippers for Mom

by tatiana on September 25, 2010

This past weekend when I was at home my mom asked me to make her a pair of booties the way our boonia (grandma) used to make them, with a puff on top. She had this pink, purple and blue glittery cotton candy-esque yarn that she never used, so I crocheted it up and made these for her! She totally loves them, and I do too. When I started making them I wasn’t really sure how they’d turn out because a.) I never really use multi-colored yarn and b.) those colors aren’t really my style… but as it turns out, I kind of proved myself wrong. Also, the big puff is as adorable as it is funny at the top of the slippers. Kind of reminded me of the munchkins of Oz.

Sunday Funday: Kitties, Yarn and Bagels

by tatiana on August 29, 2010

Everyone, meet Boo Yao, Boo Yao, this is everyone.

I’m currently house sitting, and have a new kitty “friend.” I use the term “friend” loosely as this kitty and I are still learning how to get along. Really, she’s a sweetheart, but she’s just always all up in my grill; see photo evidence above. Anyway, she loves attention, so everyone, send Boo Yao your blog love.

Aside from kitties, I’ve been working on my Babushka Etsy shop update for September 1st! I’m really excited about it. It always feels nice to dream up a big goal and actually accomplish it. I’m really close, and the 1st is only a few days away. Anyhoo, I’m off to brunch and have face time with some of my favorite people, and then more crocheting. Happy Sunday, everyone!
