The Not-So-Scrappy Scrap Yarn Blanket

by tatiana on April 14, 2012

This past year I did A LOT of crocheting for Babushka Designs. When prototyping new products, one tends to accumulate a lot of yarn… as I did. I finally got tired of looking at the two massive mountains o’ yarn in my apartment (a yarn Twin Peaks, if you will) and decided to turn it into a nice, warm, and crazy colorful blanket.

While I was working on it, I kept thinking that it was going to be super ugly because the colors that I had so much of were not colors I’d typically use in a blanket… and it was a little difficult when I ran out of certain colors and had to substitute with similar hues. This blanket took about 3 months to complete– I worked on it mostly while watching Dance Moms and The Bachelor. Good things come out of watching bad television, right?

DIY Veruca Salt Costume

by tatiana on November 6, 2011

I don’t know about you, but I had a hard time coming up with a costume idea this year. I had 3 ideas that I was debating between for a few months and found all of the items I needed for what I thought was the best costume, and then just a week before Halloween I completely scratched that idea and went with Veruca Salt. And I’m happy I did.

“Don’t care how, I want it NOW!”

I like treating Halloween as a time to pay homage to people, characters or icons I admire. Here are some of the costumes I’ve made over the last four years:

Upcycle Sundays: The 9 to 5 Ascot Blouse Revival with Babushka Designs

Hi guys! I hope everyone’s getting in gear for Halloween! I know I am. Anyway, a few weeks ago I guest posted a vintage blouse DIY that you should check out if you haven’t done so already! It might come in handy if you’re altering thrifted tops for those upcycled costumes. Have a happy and safe Halloween!

The Graduation Blanket

by tatiana on August 18, 2011

Two months ago, around the time I temporarily fell off of the blogosphere, my baby sister graduated from high school! Gah, I feel old. Anyway, it’s an important milestone, so I decided that a thoughtless gift like a Betsey Johnson handbag would not do the trick (although I’m sure she’d have no qualms about receiving that), so I decided to make her a special afghan. My Revamped Little Corner

by tatiana on April 6, 2011

I don’t even know if I could call this a “revamp” because technically… before this, the corner of my room was pretty bland, and CROWDED. There lived my hamper, my plastic dresser from college,  rubbermaid boxes full of fabric, more fabric on top, a box of patterns and some oversized books. Man oh man. A few days before my sisters and cousin were supposed to arrive into town, I decided that I needed to clean things up… and FINALLY hang some of the frames I’d purchased over a year ago. "Does Pandora have a Hanukkah station?"

by tatiana on December 2, 2010

Happy Thursday, and happy Hanukkah, everyone! Last night I was invited to a hanukkah dinner (my first!) and it was great. We had beet & carrot latkes (or, beet-kes, as someone aptly dubbed them), challah, potato soup, and fun Hanukkah-themed cookies. The highlight was hearing the origins of the holiday.

I couldn’t help but take a picture of the pretty decorations Kate made. They’re really easy to make. I think black, gold and white would be an awesome combo for my room.

DIY Hello Kitty Halloween Costume

by tatiana on November 2, 2010

This DIY costume is a little more Sandra Lee than Martha Stewart in that it’s semi-homemade. I’ve been a little obsessed with Hello Kitty lately… wait… LIES… I’ve been obsessed with Hello Kitty ever since the day my mom pushed my stroller into the Sanrio store at the Montebello Mall in the 1980s. Recently I’ve embraced my obsession, in what some would call a semi-obnoxious way. Halloween definitely gave me an excuse to exploit my love for this timeless icon. [click to continue…]

Custom Crocheted Gaming Gloves

by tatiana on October 6, 2010

Ain’t nothing better than giving a handmade gift. And I’m not only saying this because I’m a maker of handmade things, but because it’s true. The effort and love and time dedicated to making a handmade gift is palpable.

Ok, that was a little dramatic. But true, although, I was watching Frasier while I made these, and eating those sugar cookies with the frosting. SO good. Anyway, Rocio asked me to make something for our good friend Bri’s birthday. We thought gloves would be a good idea. I was excited to make these because I have been wanting to try my hand at a glove pattern for honestly about 2 years now, but just keep getting side tracked. I searched on Ravelry and found this pattern by Robyn Fleming. The gauge was a little different than Robyn’s pattern because I used Vanna’s Choice yarn (the only choice! haha). I heart Vanna’s Choice. It’s super soft and there are amazing colors to choose from. Anyway, my chain was 30 stitches in length instead of Robyn’s 25. I made a few changes as I saw fit, but overall it was a great pattern for glove-making beginners like myself. I hope Bri likes the gloves (and doesn’t see this blog entry before she receives them in the mail)!

Cotton Candy Slippers for Mom

by tatiana on September 25, 2010

This past weekend when I was at home my mom asked me to make her a pair of booties the way our boonia (grandma) used to make them, with a puff on top. She had this pink, purple and blue glittery cotton candy-esque yarn that she never used, so I crocheted it up and made these for her! She totally loves them, and I do too. When I started making them I wasn’t really sure how they’d turn out because a.) I never really use multi-colored yarn and b.) those colors aren’t really my style… but as it turns out, I kind of proved myself wrong. Also, the big puff is as adorable as it is funny at the top of the slippers. Kind of reminded me of the munchkins of Oz.

Miss New Bootie(s)

by tatiana on August 9, 2010

This weekend I was feeling the crochet itch, so I decided to work on a new product for the shop. I went with these cute booties. I worked on two prototypes before I perfected it, and voila, here we are. [click to continue…]
