Adventures in Web Design: Skata Products

by tatiana on October 2, 2009

I was recently commissioned to redesign the website and look for Skata Products. They’re a fairly new company that specializes in eco-friendly wallpaper-free solutions for beautifying any interior space, particularly with their Decorative Wall Stamp.

This was a fun project to work on because I love interior design and was given the creative freedom to make whatever I felt would do the company and their products justice, while making the site navigation accessible and intuitive. The only things the owner did not want to change were the logo (of course) and the color scheme (the bright blue and white).

I designed and developed the site and the only problem I ran into was when I went to upload the site via FTP. After many email conversations, I discovered that the hosting they were using did not allow FTP uploads. That was pretty frustrating (and CRAPPY). People, please, do not EVER use Homestead or any “hosting site” that claims that you can design your site via an interface they provide. 1.) You are most likely not a designer, 2.) Your end product will most likely be something you are not happy with, and 3.) You will get ripped off. For what you are paying to design your own site, you can instead use to pay a professional who will most likely work with your budget and make something that is both beautiful and effective. They may even provide some SEO services to help your site rank better in organic Google searches.

Whew. End of rant. All in all, this was a really great project, and they were really happy with what I made them. Hooray! Onto the next project.
